About us
- The Aphasia Alliance is a coalition of key organisations from all over the UK that work in the field of Aphasia. We have united to raise awareness of Aphasia
Aphasia is a communication disability that occurs when the language centres of the brain are damaged. It is usually caused by stroke, but can also be caused by a brain haemorrhage, brain tumour, or other neurological condition. There are over 250,000 people living with Aphasia in the UK. A third of people who survive a stroke will have communication difficulties, which means approximately 50,000 new people each year develop Aphasia.
- Aphasia is a hidden disability. This is because there is often no visual sign that someone with Aphasia has a disability. People may experience social exclusion as a result of Aphasia and this means that they remain difficult to identify.
- The general public could help if they were more aware of Aphasia and were open to adapting their communication skills accordingly. This would ensure that people with Aphasia have access to channels of communication in the same way that people with physical disabilities have the use of ramps and lifts to enable physical access.
